2024 Nursing Student Association of North Dakota Annual Convention

What it means to be a nurse leader

To be an effective nurse leader, it's important to remain open to others' ideas and perspectives, even when they challenge your own. A key part of leadership is advocating for those in need, which can sometimes involve speaking up in ways that may be uncomfortable. Developing the wisdom to know when and how to do this effectively requires years of learning and understanding. Also, it takes perfecting communication skills to be able to talk and listen well to discover the roots of issues and find solution for them to improve care and outcomes.

One of my favorite books is Never Split the Difference - Negotiating as if your Life Depended on it by Chris Voss. It may seem like an odd book for a nurse, however, his discussion on fairness and how humans perceive "fairness" is very enlighten and shows that all our decisions are based in emotion, and not logic as we wish them to be. It also teaches how to strive for a reputation of being fair plays an important role in the nurses, as we are advocator and have the reputation of most trusted professionals.

This convention let me understand the importance of continue education and learning from experts in their respected fields, with real world experience their invaluable tips and tricks to become a better nurse.

Bravery Backpacks for 31:8 Project https://www.318project.o

During my classes at the University of Mary, we have repeatedly discussed child abuse and reporting, supporting the families during their traumatic times. However, my classmate and I decided we wanted to contribute more to these children in their traumatic times. We had a guest speaker in our class, discussed the organization 31:8 Project, and focused on human traffic and abuse. There was a small inclusion at the end of the presentation about the Bravery Backpacks that stood out to us.

These Bravery Backpacks are full of necessary daily living items that a child would need.  that the officers distribute to children between 2-17 years old when they are removed from their situations and, usually without anything with them and sometimes in haste.

These backpacks contain comfort items like blankets, stuffed animals, hygiene products like toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair brushes, toiletries, journals, coloring books, crayons/markers, books, and many more items that give the child some sense of normalcy during their stressful time of their lives.
